A National Security Operative, Bright Ernest Akomeah, popularly known as ‘Double’, has told the Short Commission probing the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election disturbances that they shot on the orders of DSP Azugu.

Double said DSP Azugu ordered them to fire warning shots when they heard gunshots from the crowd.

He told the Commission that he and his colleagues saw 15 motorbikes approach the polling station with three vehicles behind them.

He said DSP Azugu went to interact with the said bikers but he and his colleagues stayed in the vehicles.

“We heard gunshots while in the vehicles and that was when DSP Azugu asked us to get out and go and investigate,” he asserted.

“We heard three gunshots from the crowd after our commander ordered us to fire warning shots while they pelted us with stones and water” he added.

According to him, everything he did on the day of the by-election was under the instruction of his commander.

He said while the engagements were going on, Sam George arrived and asked us why we were intimidating the people.

“We told him we wanted to conduct a search but he prevented us from going ahead with the search and the crowd followed suit,” Double narrated.

“The crowd started throwing stones at us so DSP Azugu asked us to fire warning shots so some were fired, although I can’t tell how,” he narrated in Twi.

When the SWAT team Commander appeared before the Commission, he had given evidence to the fact that Sam George said certain things which he suggested provoked his men to assault him.

The SWAT team Commander did not give verbal evidence of what Sam George told his men; he rather wrote the purported insult on a piece of paper and tendered in evidence.
