Drone Strike on Sudanese School Kills Two Children, Injures Dozens

A drone strike carried out by Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has killed two children and injured at least a dozen others after hitting a school in El‑Rahad, North Kordofan. The attack targeted a traditional Qur’anic school where students were attending lessons, highlighting the growing impact of the ongoing conflict on civilians.

Eyewitnesses reported chaotic scenes following the strike. One local resident, Ahmed Moussa, said he saw numerous students injured and struggling to escape as the drone impacted the building. Authorities confirmed the deaths of the two children and said several others remain in critical condition in nearby hospitals.

The RSF, a paramilitary group involved in fighting against Sudan’s regular army since the civil war erupted in April 2023, has increasingly used drones in contested areas. Experts warn that drone attacks on civilian locations, including schools and residential areas, are rising and contributing to a worsening humanitarian crisis.

The conflict in Sudan has already claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions, leaving many without access to basic services and increasing food insecurity. Human rights groups have condemned attacks on civilians, calling for protection measures and adherence to international humanitarian law.

Aid organisations and local authorities are urging for greater protection of civilians and improved access for humanitarian relief, as communities struggle to cope with the effects of prolonged violence. The incident in El‑Rahad underscores the urgent need for accountability and measures to safeguard non-combatants in Sudan’s ongoing war.
