A 28-year-old driver, Thomas Agambaa, alias Rasta, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after being convicted of conspiring to rob and robbing his former employer in the Upper East Region of Ghana. The sentence was handed down by Circuit Court 2 in Accra.
Agambaa was convicted on two counts: conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery. He pleaded guilty with an explanation, but the court determined that his explanation did not provide a defence to the charges. His explanation was instead considered during sentencing as a mitigating factor.
According to the prosecution’s case, the incident occurred on June 12, 2022, at Zaare in the Bolgatanga area. The victim, Madam Grace Belkis Azure, was reportedly targeted at her residence by a group of people who had allegedly planned to rob her.
Investigators said Agambaa had previously worked as Azure’s driver. Because of his former employment, he was familiar with her movements, activities and other information that could have been useful to individuals planning the robbery.
The prosecution alleged that Agambaa shared information with his accomplices, enabling them to target his former employer.
The case remained unresolved for several years until Agambaa was arrested by officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters Operations Unit on August 4, 2026. His arrest reportedly followed intelligence gathered by investigators in connection with an alleged organised robbery syndicate.
During questioning, Agambaa reportedly admitted his involvement in the incident and provided information about other individuals allegedly connected to the robbery.
Investigators have since continued efforts to locate the other suspects. Some of the people allegedly involved are reported to have died, while others remain at large.
The prosecution told the court that Agambaa’s previous relationship with the victim made his involvement particularly significant because he was familiar with her routine and circumstances.
The court subsequently found him guilty of the two charges and sentenced him to 15 years’ imprisonment.
The case highlights the potential risks faced by individuals who share sensitive information about their employers or former employers with criminal associates. It also demonstrates the role of intelligence-led investigations in revisiting unresolved robbery cases.
Police investigations into the wider alleged syndicate are continuing as authorities work to identify and apprehend suspects who remain at large.
The authorities are also expected to examine information provided by Agambaa as part of efforts to establish the full circumstances surrounding the 2022 robbery and determine whether other individuals should face prosecution.
For the convicted driver, the 15-year sentence brings an end to the criminal proceedings against him over his alleged role in the case, while investigations into other suspected members of the group continue.
