Former Minister of Health Dr Bernard Okoe Boye has been elected as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Greater Accra Regional Chairman after securing a decisive victory in the party’s regional executive elections held on Saturday, August 15, 2026.
Dr Okoe Boye polled 490 votes to defeat his contender, Alfred Boye, who obtained 172 votes. The result gave Okoe Boye a winning margin of 318 votes.
The election forms part of the NPP’s nationwide regional executive elections, through which the opposition party is selecting new leaders to manage its structures across the country.
Okoe Boye’s victory gives him the responsibility of leading the party’s regional organisation in Greater Accra, one of Ghana’s most politically significant regions.
Before entering the contest, Okoe Boye had explained that he was seeking the position because he believed Greater Accra would be central to the NPP’s efforts to rebuild its electoral fortunes.
During the campaign, he also rejected claims that he would be unwilling to accommodate differing views. He said his leadership would place constituency executives at the centre of the party’s activities in the region.
The former Ledzokuku Member of Parliament and Health Minister now begins his tenure at a time when the NPP is reorganising its structures and preparing for its next major political challenge.
His victory is expected to give the party a new regional leadership team tasked with strengthening grassroots organisation and improving coordination among constituency executives.
Greater Accra is particularly important to the NPP because of its large voter population and the number of constituencies within the region. The regional chairman will therefore have a major role in coordinating the party’s activities and helping to mobilise its supporters.
Okoe Boye will also be expected to work with other newly elected regional executives to promote unity within the party and address concerns among members.
The election was contested against Alfred Boye, who secured 172 votes. Despite the competition, Okoe Boye emerged with a substantial majority, giving him a strong mandate from the delegates.
His election follows a series of other notable results from the NPP’s regional elections. In the Ashanti Region, Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, popularly known as COKA, won the chairmanship race, while the party has also elected new regional executives in other parts of Ghana.
The newly elected executives are expected to serve for the coming period as the NPP works to rebuild its structures and strengthen its presence ahead of future elections.
For Okoe Boye, the immediate task will be to translate his electoral victory into effective leadership and bring together the various groups within the Greater Accra branch.
His earlier promise to operate as a “chief servant” rather than a lord also signals the leadership approach he intends to adopt as he assumes the regional chairmanship.
With the election now concluded, attention will turn to how the new chairman works with constituency executives and other party stakeholders to strengthen the NPP’s organisation across Greater Accra.
