An Enchi District Magistrate Court has remanded 13 suspected illegal miners into police custody following their arrest for engaging in unlawful mining activities within the Boi Tano Forest Reserve.
The suspects were apprehended during a special operation by security agencies aimed at clamping down on illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, in protected forest zones. Authorities say the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to protect Ghana’s natural resources and prevent further environmental destruction.
During the court proceedings, the magistrate ordered that the suspects remain in custody while investigations continue. Prosecutors are expected to file additional charges and present further evidence when the case resumes.
Illegal mining has become a major environmental concern across several regions of Ghana, with activities often linked to forest degradation, pollution of water bodies, and threats to local livelihoods.
