Cashew Farmers in Bono Region Call for Fixed Annual Producer Price

Cashew farmers in Ghana’s Bono Region are urging the government to establish a fixed annual producer price for raw cashew nuts (RCNs) to protect their livelihoods from fluctuating market conditions. According to the farmers, the current pricing system, which is largely influenced by global market trends, leaves them vulnerable and uncertain about their income each season.

Many farmers explained that unpredictable prices make it difficult to plan production, cover operational costs, or invest in improving yields. Small- and medium-scale producers, in particular, are disproportionately affected, often earning less than expected despite labor-intensive cultivation practices.

In response, the farmers have called on policymakers to intervene by introducing a minimum guaranteed price for raw cashew nuts. They argue that such a measure would stabilize incomes, encourage investment in the cashew value chain, and enhance food security and economic resilience in rural communities.

Advocates for a fixed producer price also highlight the broader economic benefits. By providing stability, Ghana could incentivize more farmers to grow cashew, boost domestic production, reduce reliance on imports, and strengthen the overall agricultural sector. Supporters believe that a consistent pricing policy would foster long-term growth and development in the cashew industry while ensuring fairness for producers.

The call for intervention comes amid wider discussions on improving agricultural policy and rural development in Ghana. Farmers and industry stakeholders are closely watching for a government response that could shape the future of cashew production in the Bono Region and nationwide.

By establishing a fixed producer price, the government would signal support for local agriculture, empower farmers to invest confidently in their farms, and contribute to the sustainability and competitiveness of Ghana’s cashew industry on the global stage.
