CAF official dies after disturbances in Ghana-Nigeria WC play offs
An official of the Confederation of African Football has died after Ghana’s World Cup play-off game against Nigeria on Tuesday, 29 March 2022.
Dr Joseph Kabungo, a Zambian medical practitioner, is reported to have lost consciousness following the disturbances by Nigerian supporters after the Black Stars qualified for the World Cup ahead of the Super Eagles on their home soil.
The Nigerian supporters stormed the pitch destroying everything in their way. Their disturbances caused the security to fire tear gas to disperse them.
It is alleged that Dr Kabungo was beaten and stepped on as fans tried to make their way out of the stadium due to a stampede
He was CAF’s designated Doping Officer for the game between Ghana and Nigeria.
His death was confirmed after he was rushed to the hospital.
