Buhari expresses disappointment about Nigeria elections postponement
The President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari is the least enthused by the decision of the country’s electoral body to postpone the much anticipated presidential and other elections.
The president in a tweet on Saturday said he is disappointed.
President Buhari is seeking re-election in a contest largely seen as a two-horse race between himself and former vice president Atiku Abubakar who is contesting on the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party.
The Nigerian Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) postponed Nigeria’s Presidential Election which was originally scheduled to come off today, February 16, 2018 to Saturday, February 23, 2019.
The Governorship, State House of Assembly and Federal Capital Territorial Area Council Elections will also come off on Saturday, the 9th of March, 2019
The announcement was made few hours to polls.
“Following a careful review of the implementation of its logistics and operational plan and the determination to conduct a free, fair and credible elections, the Commission came to the conclusion that proceeding with the election as scheduled in no longer feasible,” the Commission said in a press release.
But President Buhari has condemned the decision.
“I am deeply disappointed that despite the long notice given and our preparations both locally and internationally, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) postponed the Presidential and National Assembly elections within hours of its commencement,” he tweeted.
The Independent National Electoral Commission is expected to address the nation later Saturday to explain its decision.
