Questions are being raised about the political future of South African opposition leader Julius Malema after he was sentenced to five years in prison.
Malema, who leads the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), was convicted over firearm-related offences linked to a 2018 political rally where he was accused of discharging a weapon in public.
Following the ruling, he has not been taken into custody immediately as his legal team has filed an appeal against both the conviction and the sentence, allowing him to remain out of prison while the case continues.
The court’s decision has sparked debate due to its political and legal implications, particularly concerning his position in Parliament.
Under South African law, individuals sentenced to direct imprisonment exceeding a certain threshold risk losing their eligibility to serve as Members of Parliament, which could affect Malema’s seat if the conviction is upheld.
The ruling has divided public opinion, with supporters arguing that the case is politically motivated, while others believe it reflects the enforcement of firearm laws and accountability for public figures.
Within the EFF, uncertainty is growing over future leadership arrangements should the appeal fail, given Malema’s central role in the party.
For now, his political future remains uncertain and depends heavily on the outcome of the ongoing appeal process in the courts.
