A 54-year-old woman has publicly revealed that she endured decades of abuse at the hands of her late father, who later served as a pastor. Her courageous testimony sheds light on the long-term impact of child abuse and raises awareness about the need for stronger child protection measures.
The woman, identified as Afua Kesse-Amponsah, says the abuse began when she was just two years old. She alleges that her father assumed custody of her under circumstances that allowed him to commit repeated acts of physical and psychological harm. The abuse reportedly escalated over the years, leaving lasting physical injuries and emotional scars.
Among the alleged incidents, Ms. Kesse-Amponsah claims her father forced her to switch from her left hand to her right hand, inflicting beatings and fractures when she resisted. She also described being compelled to take powdered aspirin on an empty stomach to mask swelling from injuries, which caused her long-term health complications, including ulcers and chronic pain.
“I have lived with the effects of constant, severe, and chronic violence for decades,” she said. “Breaking my silence now is about reclaiming my voice and speaking out for all children who are vulnerable to abuse.”
Ms. Kesse-Amponsah, who now lives in the United Kingdom, has been diagnosed with Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) and has undergone treatment at St Thomas’ Hospital. Despite reporting the historic abuse to UK authorities, she says no prosecution was possible because her father is deceased. However, her case has been documented, highlighting institutional failures and gaps in accountability.
The woman’s decision to speak out is not only personal but also a call to action. She has urged parents, guardians, and communities to reject severe physical punishment and adopt more compassionate approaches to child discipline. “Violence against those smaller and more vulnerable than you should never be justified,” she emphasized.
Her testimony has sparked public conversation about child protection, discipline practices, and the role of institutions in safeguarding children. Many observers have praised her courage and resilience, highlighting the importance of providing support and platforms for survivors to share their stories.
By breaking a 50-year silence, Ms. Kesse-Amponsah hopes to inspire others who have experienced abuse to speak out, while also prompting governments, religious institutions, and communities to strengthen mechanisms for accountability and child protection.
