A woman claiming to be an NDC party member has given a detailed account of items she says were distributed to delegates during the Ayawaso East Constituency parliamentary primaries, sparking debate over the integrity of the election.
According to her testimony, delegates reportedly received a variety of items, including 32-inch television sets and food items such as boiled eggs, as voting got underway on Saturday, February 7, 2026. Videos circulating on social media showed delegates holding boxes and other goods, raising questions about whether the distribution could have influenced voting behaviour.
The primary was conducted to select the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for the Ayawaso East by-election, following the death of the constituency’s sitting Member of Parliament. Notable aspirants included Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, and Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the late MP.
Supporters of some candidates defended the distribution, describing the items as tokens of appreciation rather than inducements. However, critics argue that handing out gifts during the primaries could undermine the fairness of the electoral process and raise concerns about potential vote-buying.
The controversy has prompted calls for investigations into the matter, with party leadership stating that it is closely monitoring the situation and will take appropriate action to ensure internal democracy is upheld. The incident highlights ongoing debates about ethics, transparency, and accountability within Ghanaian political party primaries.
