Atletico Madrid head coach, Diego Simeone, has explained his decision to substitute Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman during the Copa del Rey final, which ended in disappointment for the Spanish side after a penalty shootout defeat to Real Sociedad on Saturday night.
The highly anticipated final, part of the Copa del Rey Final, delivered an intense contest filled with drama, goals, and tactical battles. Atletico Madrid found themselves under early pressure but managed to respond strongly, with Lookman playing a key role in their comeback.
The Nigerian international showcased his attacking quality and composure in front of goal, scoring a crucial equaliser that helped Atletico Madrid recover from a poor start. His contribution was vital in bringing the match level at 2-2 after regulation and extra time, keeping Atletico in contention for the trophy.
Despite his strong performance, Lookman was substituted in the 62nd minute of the match. The decision immediately raised questions among fans and analysts, especially given his influence on the game at that point.
However, speaking during the post-match press conference, Simeone defended his tactical choice and clarified the reasoning behind the change. According to the Atletico boss, the substitution was made with a specific attacking strategy in mind.
“Because I understood that with Sorloth playing there as a number nine, we could create more scoring opportunities, and that Julián could fulfil Lookman’s role,” Simeone explained.
The coach’s decision was aimed at reshaping Atletico’s attacking structure to increase pressure on Real Sociedad’s defence. Simeone believed that introducing a traditional striker would provide more presence in the box, while allowing Julian Álvarez to adapt into a wider or supporting attacking position.
Despite these tactical adjustments, Atletico Madrid were unable to secure victory in normal or extra time. The match eventually proceeded to penalties, where Real Sociedad held their nerve and triumphed 4-3 in the shootout, securing the Copa del Rey title.
The result marked a painful ending for Atletico Madrid, who had fought hard to stay in the contest but ultimately fell short in the decisive moments. For Lookman, however, his performance remained a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing final for the club.
The Nigerian forward continues to build his reputation in European football with impactful performances in major matches, and his contribution in the final will be remembered despite Atletico’s defeat.
