Police in Accra have arrested a 24-year-old okada rider in connection with a robbery attack on a staff member of the Namibian High Commission at the Airport Residential Area.
The suspect, identified as Daniel Ashiagbe, was picked up by the Accra Regional Police Command following investigations into the incident, which occurred on February 23, 2026. The victim, a staff member of the Namibian High Commission, reported the robbery to the police two days later on February 25.
According to police reports, the victim was walking towards the Namibian High Commission in Accra when a young man riding a motorbike approached and snatched her handbag before speeding away.
The stolen bag contained several valuable items, including an iPhone 15 Pro Max valued at about GH¢19,000 and a Huawei P50 Pro worth approximately GH¢11,000. Other belongings taken during the attack included the victim’s Namibian diplomatic passport, driver’s licence, ATM cards, house and office keys, and other personal items.
Following the report, police launched an investigation and tracked one of the stolen mobile phones to a spare parts dealer around Galawe near the Agbogbloshie Total filling station. Officers arrested a suspect identified as Miracle Asare, aged 26, and retrieved the iPhone.
Further investigations led police to two phone dealers at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, who were also arrested for their alleged involvement in the chain through which the stolen phone was sold.
The second stolen phone was later traced to Dansoman, leading to another arrest as police worked to unravel the network connected to the robbery.
Subsequent intelligence operations eventually led to the arrest of Daniel Ashiagbe, the okada rider believed to be the main suspect behind the attack.
During interrogation, police say Ashiagbe confessed to carrying out the robbery. He reportedly admitted that after stealing the items, he sold the iPhone 15 Pro Max for GH¢2,500 at Kwame Nkrumah Circle and disposed of the Huawei phone for GH¢1,000.
Investigators also revealed that the suspect confessed to burning the victim’s diplomatic passport and other official documents that were inside the handbag.
Police believe the suspect may be connected to other robbery incidents in parts of Accra, and investigations are currently ongoing.
In a related development, the Weija Divisional Police Command also arrested another suspect, Jeffrey Selassie Johnson, for allegedly threatening an Uber driver with a toy pistol during a dispute over transport fare.
According to police, the suspect hired the driver from Weija China Mall to Aplaku, but upon reaching the destination, he refused to pay the fare. He allegedly went into his room and returned with a replica Beretta pistol, which he used to threaten the driver. The driver quickly alerted the police, leading to Johnson’s arrest.
A search conducted in the suspect’s room led to the recovery of the imitation firearm, and the case has since been forwarded to court.
The Accra Regional Police Command has warned the public against engaging in criminal activities and cautioned individuals who deal in stolen property that they risk arrest and prosecution. Police also reaffirmed their commitment to combating robbery and other crimes to ensure the safety of residents in the region.
