Former President John Dramani Mahama has launched the first AgroTech Fair, a platform aimed at showcasing Ghana’s agricultural innovations and encouraging the use of technology to improve productivity across the sector.
During the event, Mr Mahama emphasised the importance of adopting modern agricultural methods and technologies to boost production, create jobs and strengthen food security. He said that innovation should not be limited to large commercial farms but must also benefit smallholder farmers who make up the majority of Ghana’s agricultural workforce.
According to Mr Mahama, the fair brings together researchers, technology developers, input suppliers, extension officers and farmers to share ideas, display new tools and discuss solutions to persistent challenges in agriculture. He noted that agriculture is a cornerstone of the economy and urged stakeholders to prioritise innovative approaches to tackle issues such as climate change, soil degradation and post‑harvest losses.
The former president also highlighted the need for youth involvement in agriculture, noting that technology presents opportunities to make farming more attractive and profitable for young people. He encouraged the youth to view agriculture as a viable business and to participate actively in tech‑driven ventures that support the food value chain.
Exhibitors at the fair showcased a range of innovations, including digital platforms for farm management, automated irrigation systems, modern processing equipment and mobile apps that connect farmers to markets and extension services.
Participants said the AgroTech Fair provides a valuable space for collaboration between scientists, entrepreneurs and farmers, allowing new ideas to be tested and scaled.
Mr Mahama called on government agencies, development partners and the private sector to support efforts to mainstream agricultural technologies and improve access to finance and training for farmers.
The launch of the AgroTech Fair signals a renewed focus on harnessing science and technology to transform Ghana’s agricultural landscape. Organisers said they plan to make the event an annual showcase to accelerate the adoption of tech solutions that enhance efficiency, sustainability and profitability in farming.
