Ghanaian winger Joseph Paintsil has shared details about his omission from Ghana’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, revealing the explanation given to him by former Black Stars coach Otto Addo.
According to Paintsil, the coach explained that his exclusion was not solely based on his attacking output, emphasizing that football decisions go beyond goals and assists. He indicated that other elements of his performance were considered in the selection process.
He noted that factors such as tactical discipline, defensive contributions, and overall fit within the team system played a role in the final decision to leave him out of the squad.
Paintsil admitted that missing out on the tournament was a major disappointment, especially after working hard in the build-up to the competition. However, he said the setback served as motivation for him to improve his overall game.
Since then, the winger has focused on enhancing his performances at club level, using the experience as a stepping stone to push for future opportunities with the national team.
His revelation has sparked renewed conversations among fans about squad selection decisions during the 2022 World Cup, particularly regarding players who were left out despite being in good form at the time.
Despite the disappointment, Paintsil remains determined to prove himself and earn a place in future Black Stars squads.
