The Government of Ghana has secured a 2,000‑megawatt (MW) renewable energy plan to help power its ambition of a 24‑Hour Economy, a major step toward strengthening electricity reliability and supporting national development.
Under the initiative, the government will source a large portion of the new power capacity from renewable energy projects, marking a shift toward cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions. The plan aims to significantly reduce power outages, stabilise supply, and provide the consistent electricity needed to sustain round‑the‑clock industrial, commercial, and social activities.
Officials say the renewable energy plan is expected to complement existing power generation infrastructure and reduce dependence on expensive thermal plants and fossil fuels. By diversifying the energy mix with solar, wind, and other clean energy sources, the initiative supports Ghana’s efforts to enhance energy security and promote environmentally friendly power production.
The move comes amid ongoing efforts by the government to attract both local and international investment into the energy sector. Authorities believe that boosting renewable energy capacity will not only provide reliable electricity for businesses and households but will also create jobs, drive industrial growth, and support long‑term economic transformation.
Ghana’s 24‑Hour Economy agenda — which seeks to ensure continuous electricity supply — has been a central policy focus for the government, aimed at accelerating economic activity, enhancing productivity, and improving the quality of life for citizens.
The addition of 2,000MW from renewable sources is expected to dramatically reduce power shortages and allow more sectors of the economy to operate without interruption. It also aligns with global trends toward clean energy adoption, helping Ghana meet its climate and sustainability commitments.
Officials have indicated that the plan will involve partnerships with private energy developers, and details of project locations and implementation timelines are expected to be announced in the coming months. Authorities say the renewable energy push is a strategic investment that will position Ghana as a regional leader in clean and reliable power generation.
