A fuel tanker was engulfed in flames following a serious road accident on the Nsawam–Accra Highway, causing panic among motorists and residents in the area.
The incident, which reportedly occurred around the Teacher Mante stretch of the busy highway, was captured on video and widely circulated on social media. In the footage, the tanker can be seen completely on fire, with thick black smoke billowing into the air as nearby vehicles and road users struggled to move to safety.
Eyewitnesses say the accident happened suddenly, triggering an intense blaze that quickly spread across the tanker. Several vehicles close to the scene were forced to halt, while commuters and bystanders fled the area in fear of a possible explosion.
Emergency response teams, including personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, were alerted and swiftly moved in to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further. Firefighters worked to control the blaze and secure the area, while traffic officers redirected vehicles to ease congestion along the highway.
Although the fire caused significant disruption to traffic and movement on the stretch, there has been no official confirmation of casualties at the time of reporting. Authorities are yet to release a full statement on the cause of the accident and the extent of damage caused.
The Nsawam–Accra Highway is one of Ghana’s busiest transport routes, frequently used by heavy-duty vehicles, including fuel tankers and commercial trucks. Road safety experts continue to raise concerns about accidents involving fuel tankers, warning that such incidents pose serious risks to human lives, property, and the environment.
Investigations are expected to be carried out to determine the cause of the crash and the fire outbreak, as authorities work to prevent similar incidents in the future.
