The Cocoa Marketing Company (COCOBOD) has raised concerns that international buyers are increasingly shunning Ghana’s cocoa due to its high prices, making the country’s beans less competitive on the global market.
According to COCOBOD officials, although Ghana is known worldwide for producing premium-quality cocoa, current pricing levels are discouraging some international buyers, who are now turning to other cocoa-producing countries where prices are more favourable. This shift, they warn, could affect Ghana’s share of the global cocoa market.
The development poses a significant challenge for the country’s economy, as cocoa remains one of Ghana’s most important export commodities and a major source of foreign exchange. Thousands of farmers and rural households depend on cocoa production for their livelihoods, making market competitiveness a critical national concern.
