A 23-year-old man identified as Kwabena Agyei has been found dead at Akontanim in the Dormaa East District of the Bono Region, in an incident linked to illegal mining activities.
Reports indicate that the deceased was allegedly involved in illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, which continues to raise serious environmental and security concerns across Ghana.
The incident is believed to have occurred following a confrontation involving an anti-galamsey taskforce operating in the area. Preliminary accounts suggest that the deceased and others may have clashed with the enforcement team during an operation in the mining zone.
His body was later discovered on the outskirts of the community with visible injuries, raising suspicions that he may have been assaulted prior to his death.
Following the discovery, local authorities and community leaders reported the matter to the police, who visited the scene to begin investigations. The body was subsequently conveyed to a nearby hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The incident reportedly sparked tension in the area, with some groups believed to be connected to illegal mining activities staging protests and blocking roads, leading to temporary disruptions before security personnel restored calm.
The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the death and to identify those responsible.
The case adds to ongoing national concerns about galamsey activities, which have been linked to environmental degradation, pollution of water bodies, and periodic clashes between miners and enforcement teams.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm as investigations continue, while warning against any retaliatory actions that could escalate tensions in the community.
