Are you really a coach or a trainer scout? – Journalist asks Otto Addo after Niger defeat

Black Stars head coach, Otto Addo, clashed with a journalist over his credential as a coach following Ghana’s defeat against Niger on Monday, November 18, 2024.

The journalist, identified as Kobi Stone, questioned Otto Addo’s coaching certificate and sought clarification over whether he is ‘a coach or a scout’.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, the former Borussia Dortmund trainer detailing his coaching trajectory to secure a UEFA Pro license, mentioned his stint with notable clubs like Hamburger SV, Borussia Monchengladbach, a brief spell with Pep Guardiola and his time at Dortmund.

He also mentioned that he was offered a scouting job by former Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah, specifically to compile full reports on Germany, Ghana’s group opponent for the 2014 World Cup.

He further emphasised that he had only worked as a scout for six months before asking the journalist, “What am I?”

The journalist, in response, said, “Then I think your scouting is better than your coaching.”

Otto Addo has been harshly criticised following the Black Stars’ dreadful run in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.

His charges failed to win a game, losing three and drawing three. As a result, the four-time African champions finished bottom of a group that consisted of Angola, Sudan and Niger.

They concluded the qualifying series with a 1-2 home defeat to Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium.
