An American nun has been released after five months in captivity in Burkina Faso.

83-year-old Suellen Theresa Tennyson, was taken hostage in the middle of the night in early April.

She was barefoot and left behind her glasses and blood pressure medication.

The bishop of the diocese where she served, Theophile Nare, said the nun was currently in a safe place and in good health, a BBC Africa LIVE report stated.

The Federal Bureau of Investigations, FBI, had issued a kidnapping notice with her photos on April 20.

The notice read in part: “The #FBI seeks information about Suellen Theresa Tennyson, an American citizen & Nun living & working in Burkina Faso, who was kidnapped by armed gunmen in Yalgo, Burkina Faso, on April 4, 2022, & may potentially be located in Burkina Faso, Mali, or Niger”

No further information was given relative to the conditions and who the kidnappers are.

Burkina Faso is suffering a security crisis brought on by terrorist elements who have been attacking military and civilian population. Kidnappings are rare as compared to the spate in Nigeria for example.
