Amapiano artists Mpura and Killer Kau killed in car accident

  • South African artists Mpura and Killer Kau have died in a car accident that killed six people. A spokesperson for the department of transport, roads and community safety confirmed to Times Live that on August 7th, six people died in a head-on collision on the N4 in Rustenburg, South Africa. The pair were on their way to perform in the city that night. Times Live reports three other upcoming artists were also killed in the accident—Khanya “The Voice” Hadebe, DJ Thando Tot and TD. Police have launched an investigation into alleged culpable homicide. 23-year-old Killer Kau became an internet sensation in 2017, when a video of him performing his debut single “Tholukuthi Hey!” was picked up by DJ Euphoric after spotting it on Twitter. The track would go on to have huge success in South Africa. Mpura had recently been gaining traction, winning fans with his 2020 track “Umsebenzi Wethu,” a collaboration with Busta 929. Fans and fellow artists in the amapiano community have been sharing their tributes over social media since news of the accident became public.
