Aliko Dangote Credits Ooni of Ife for Clearing Shrines Before Refinery Construction

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has shared how he overcame cultural and spiritual obstacles to build his massive oil refinery in Nigeria. The project site, located in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, was previously occupied by over 19 sacred shrines, which had long prevented development in the area.
Dangote explained that the presence of these shrines meant no work could be undertaken without addressing the cultural and spiritual sensitivities involved. To navigate this challenge, he sought the assistance of Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi (Ojaja II), the Ooni of Ife, a respected traditional leader in Nigeria known for his influence in spiritual and cultural matters.
The Ooni reportedly facilitated the removal of the shrines, allowing construction to commence smoothly. Dangote praised the traditional ruler’s intervention, noting that it was crucial in enabling the refinery project to move forward.
The Dangote refinery, now one of the largest single-site refineries in the world, is expected to significantly reduce Africa’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products. The facility is also projected to create tens of thousands of jobs and boost Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
This experience highlights the important role that traditional leaders can play in supporting industrial development in regions where cultural and spiritual considerations are deeply rooted. Dangote’s collaboration with the Ooni of Ife demonstrates how respecting local customs while pursuing modern infrastructure projects can turn potential obstacles into opportunities for progress.
The story also underscores the broader lesson for investors and policymakers: understanding and engaging with local traditions is essential for sustainable and successful development initiatives in Africa.
