Dutch court rejects two bail applications by Asante Akyem North MP Ohene Kwame Frimpong
A Dutch court has rejected two bail applications filed on behalf of Asante Akyem North Member of Parliament, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, who remains in custody in the Netherlands.
Frimpong was arrested at Schiphol Airport in May 2026 after travelling from Ghana. He has remained in detention as legal proceedings concerning his possible extradition continue.
The latest development was disclosed by Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for South Dayi, during an interview on September 23, 2026.
According to Dafeamekpor, the MP’s legal team has made two attempts to secure his release on bail. Both applications were unsuccessful.
The first was a substantive bail application, while a subsequent appeal against the decision was also rejected by the Dutch authorities.
Frimpong will therefore remain in custody as the Netherlands prepares to hear the substantive extradition proceedings.
His extradition hearing has been scheduled for November 18, 2026. The hearing is expected to determine the next stage of the legal process concerning the request for his possible extradition.
The case has attracted considerable attention in Ghana because of Frimpong’s position as a sitting Member of Parliament.
Dafeamekpor said Parliament is preparing for the substantive hearing and is also working on a statement concerning the status of the Asante Akyem North legislator.
Reports surrounding Frimpong’s arrest have linked the case to allegations involving romance scams and money laundering. However, these remain allegations, and the exact details of the accusations are expected to be addressed through the Dutch legal process.
The Majority Chief Whip has previously urged the media and the public to exercise caution when discussing the case, particularly because some information circulating about the MP’s arrest has not been officially verified.
He has indicated that Parliament and Frimpong’s legal team are working to obtain the relevant official documents so that the matter can be properly understood.
The rejection of the two bail applications means that Frimpong will remain in Dutch custody until at least the next stages of the proceedings, subject to any further legal applications.
The November 18 extradition hearing will be closely watched in Ghana, particularly by Parliament and constituents of Asante Akyem North.
An extradition hearing does not itself establish guilt or innocence regarding the allegations against an individual. The proceedings are instead concerned with the legal requirements for transferring a person from one country to another to face proceedings there.
For now, the Dutch court’s rejection of the bail applications means the Ghanaian MP remains detained while the extradition process moves forward.
Further developments are expected as Parliament, the MP’s legal representatives and Dutch authorities continue to deal with the case.
