Taxi driver jailed 12 years for luring teen with spiked drink before assault

The Dansoman Circuit Court has sentenced a 39-year-old taxi driver to 12 years’ imprisonment for defiling a 14-year-old girl in Accra.

The convict, Francis Ammisah, allegedly lured the minor with Coca-Cola. After the act, Ammisah gave the victim GH¢2 and threatened her not to tell anyone.

The convict pleaded not guilty to the charge of defilement when he first appeared in court in 2023 but was found guilty by the court, presided over by Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit.

Facts of the case

According to the facts presented to the court by Chief Inspector (C/Insp) Christopher Wonder, the victim would typically spend weekends with the complainant at Lapaz.

On 28 October 2023, the victim woke up weak in the morning and was struggling to sit up. “The complainant questioned the victim about what was wrong with her, and the victim revealed that Ammisah had been regularly taking her to a location at Mataheko in his red car, where he would mix a white substance into a bottle of Coke and give it to her to drink before having sex with her,” the prosecutor told the court.

“The convict, after the act, would give her GH¢2.00 and threaten that she would die if she told anyone,” C/Insp Wonder added.

The prosecutor explained that a complaint was lodged with the Odorkor Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit, leading to the convict’s arrest. During interrogation, Ammisah denied having sexual intercourse with the victim.

A police medical form was issued for the victim to be examined, and a medical report was subsequently issued and duly endorsed by a doctor. Following investigations, the accused was charged with the offence and brought before the court.
