30-Year-Old Man Electrocuted While Attempting to Steal in Berekum

A 30-year-old man, popularly known by residents as Commotion, has met his untimely death after being electrocuted while allegedly attempting to steal electrical cables in Berekum B.P, located in the Berekum East Municipality of the Bono Region.
According to local reports, the incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday when the deceased reportedly tried to tamper with live electrical wires in an attempt to steal. Residents were later alerted by a loud noise and a sudden power outage in the area. Upon tracing the source of the fault, they discovered the lifeless body of the man lying near the electric pole.
Eyewitnesses say Commotion was well-known in the community and had been cautioned several times for his involvement in petty theft. Unfortunately, his latest act turned fatal as the strong electric current instantly electrocuted him.
Officials from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and local police officers quickly arrived at the scene to secure the area and ensure the safety of nearby residents. The body of the deceased has since been conveyed to the Berekum Holy Family Hospital morgue for autopsy and further investigations.
Residents of Berekum B.P expressed shock and sadness over the tragic incident. Some community members noted that the man’s death should serve as a warning to others who engage in similar unlawful activities. They called on the youth to focus on legitimate means of livelihood instead of resorting to stealing or vandalizing public property.
A local opinion leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, urged authorities to intensify public education on the dangers of tampering with electrical equipment. “This is not the first time we are witnessing such an unfortunate event. The youth must be educated that electricity is not something to play with. It can kill instantly,” he said.
The police have begun investigations into the case and advised the public to report suspicious activities, especially those involving electrical installations. The Electricity Company also reminded the public that interference with their infrastructure not only poses grave risks to life but also disrupts power supply and damages expensive equipment.
The tragic death of Commotion has sparked renewed conversations in Berekum and nearby communities about unemployment, youth crime, and the need for social support systems. Many residents believe that economic hardship and lack of opportunities often push young people into dangerous acts of theft and vandalism.
Authorities have, however, reiterated that no amount of hardship justifies endangering one’s life through criminal activity. The Berekum East Municipal Assembly is said to be working with local security agencies to increase surveillance around public installations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
As investigations continue, the story of Commotion remains a stark reminder of the deadly consequences of tampering with electrical systems and the importance of finding safer and lawful ways to earn a living.
