21 Suspects Arrested in Major Anti-Galamsey Operation in Savannah Region

A joint security operation in the Savannah Region has led to the arrest of 21 individuals suspected of engaging in illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey. The suspects include 11 Chinese nationals and 10 Ghanaians who were rounded up during an early-morning swoop on December 2, 2025.
Security officers targeted multiple illegal mining sites believed to be contributing to severe environmental degradation in the area. During the operation, officers reportedly encountered active mining pits and equipment used for unauthorized gold extraction.
The arrested individuals were taken into custody for further investigation, with authorities expected to file charges related to environmental offenses, illegal mining, and possible immigration violations.
The crackdown forms part of ongoing national efforts to combat galamsey, which continues to pose major threats to Ghana’s forests, rivers, and communities. Officials say more coordinated operations are planned across other regions.
Further updates are expected as investigations progress.
