The ongoing crackdown on illegal mining activities by the 200-man Operation Halt military team saw the burning of at least 20 excavators at Larbikrom, Dompem and Pamen, all in the Atiwa District on Sunday.
Reports indicate that 8 out of the number of excavators burnt on Sunday belonged to the National Women Organizer of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Madam Kate Gyamfua.
The raid on the mining site is said to have delayed for hours after the military team was inundated by several calls from various quarters to cause a halt to the operation.
The machinery, including some bulldozers reportedly hired to reclaim degraded land on the site, were eventually set ablaze by the military team.
In a report by Adomonline sighted by GhanaWeb, some individuals who claim to be workers on the site said the military officers beat up some of the workers and left the site with some alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages kept in a fridge.
The exercise is said to have been repeated at Akyem Larbikrom and Dompem where four excavators including two brand new ones, each valued at $120,000 were also set ablaze.
Other equipments burnt at the various sites include dozens of water pumping machines. The military team is also said to have seized some pump-action guns which were being used to protect the mining sites.
One Nana Asante who is reported to be the secretary to the NPP National Women Organizer has expressed disappointment about the development while arguing that they had adhered to all the mining laws including reclamation of degraded lands.
According to Nana Asante, the military team could have considered the contributions of Madam Gyamfua to the NPP and retreated on its actions.
Meanwhile, a Member of the Small-Scale Miners Association in the Eastern Region, Alhaji Hussein Suronim has stated that the affected mining sites are not illegal but licensed small-scale mining sites that adhered to all the mining regulations and have thus condemned the military’s action.
• According to Computer Man, COP Kofi Boakye has the capacity to deal with crime-related activities recorded in the country
• He made the appeal while sharing his views on recent crimes witnessed in Ghana
The Founder and Leader of Hope Generation Ministry, Prophet Eric Amponsah, has made a passionate appeal to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to appoint COP Nathan Kofi Boakye as the next Inspector General of Police.
Speaking in an interview with Oman Channel sighted by Ghanaweb, Prophet Amponsah touted the Head of Research and Planning for the Police Service as the only person viable of leading a police service capable of dealing with the recent rise in crimes.
“I will appeal to the President, His Excellency Nana Addo Danwka Akufo-Addo to appoint COP Kofi Boakye as IGP. Maybe COP Kofi Boakye between 2014 and 2016 supervised some arrests in the Ashanti Region which may not have augured well. But the only thing that can make Ghana peaceful and end armed robbery is COP Kofi Boakye. You can mark it on a wall,” Computer Man stated while sharing his view on the recent robbery cases including two separate attacks on bullion vans.
Armed gunmen on Monday, June 14, 2021, attacked a bullion van at Jamestown in Accra.
The robbers after staging the attack in which they made away with some undisclosed amount left dead a police officer who was on escort duty in the attacked van and a trader who was a resident in the vicinity.
On the next Tuesday after the Jamestown attack, another bullion van robbery incident was staged on the Accra -Winneba Road.
Unlike the Jamestown incident, the Accra-Winneba Road attack was unsuccessful as the robbers failed to stop the van despite their firing of several gunshots.
The two broad daylight robbery attacks coupled with other gun-related crimes recorded over the past few weeks has led many Ghanaians to raise concern over the level of security in the country.
Some Security Analyst including Mr Adam Bonaa have called for the resignation of the current Inspector General of Police.
What looked like a romantic father’s day message to her husband, President Nana Akufo-Addo, turned sour as Ghanaian social media users directed their anger on first lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo.
She took to social media Sunday to praise her husband on father’s day and expressed how proud she was that Nana Akufo-Addo was working to make things work in the country.
“Over the last four years having watched and prayed for my husband as father of the nation, I have had a close view of the sleepless nights, the countless overstretches and the physical strain to make this country work,” she stated in his article.
Madam Akufo-Addo added, “President Akufo-Addo remains a father we all would be proud of.”
But the above message which was part of her goodwill message to the president has infuriated most Ghanaians who believe the nation is not on the right track, owning to the fact the cost of living is high in the country.
The first lady’s message coincided with an increment in fuel prices across the country– the more reason some Ghanaians descended on her.
