Police probe theft of GHS600K fertiliser

The Brong Ahafo regional police command has commenced investigations into the theft of some subsidised fertilisers meant for government’s Planting for Food and Jobs initiative.

Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Kwaku Asoma Cheremeh, who revealed this at a press conference, said the fertiliser, estimated at GHS600,000, were stolen from the food distribution depot under the supervision of the Sunyani Municipal Agriculture office between November 2017 and June this year.

The minister said some officers of the Food and Agriculture Ministry in the municipality are under investigation.

The highly-subsidised fertilisers were meant for distribution to farmers under the flagship initiative meant to increase food yield and create jobs.

Mr Cheremeh told the media: “The matter is in the hands of the regional crime office and they are investigating. About seven officers of the municipal agricultural office have been interrogated, statements have been taken from them and the police are still doing their investigation.

“This morning, we met the six officers involved, together with the director of agriculture and some security personnel to go into the matter, but our conclusion is that we cannot say Mr A or Mr B has stolen fertilisers from the depot since investigation is still ongoing.

“This is also to serve as a signal to other districts where we have quantities of fertilisers at our depots so that those who have in mind to pilfer them will have to put a stop to it.”
