Veep Dr. Bawumia cuts sod for Tema motorway interchange



Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has officially cut the sod to pave the way for the construction of a state of the art interchange at the Tema Motorway roundabout to ease traffic congestion on that stretch and beyond.

Vice President Dr. Bawumia in a remark admonished Ghanaians not to turn the improvement of infrastructure especially roads into death traps.

He said quality roads should translate into development and economic growth and not incessant road accidents which lead to unnecessary loss of lives.

Vice President bemoaned the high rate of carnage on the roads.

He stressed the need for road users to exercise restraint behind the wheels.

The interchange is being funded with a grant of 280 million Ghana by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

It will replace the current roundabout to ease traffic congestion on the Tema Motorway especially during rush hours.

The project will see the transformation of the current roundabout into an interchange and other ancillary works, including drainage, pedestrian walkways and landscaping.

The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako Ofori Attach explained that the project which is in two phases will see the construction of a 2.1km three lane dual carriage way with an underpass among others.

The Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Tsutomu Himeno said the project comes on the back of a request from Ghana in 2013 stressing that Japan is committed to improving quality infrastructure in Ghana and Africa as a whole.

He was optimistic that the project will be completed on schedule.

Vice President Bawumia reiterating government’s commitment to improve infrastructure said cautioned road users to be careful on the roads to avoid unnecessary accidents which claim precious lives

The project project is expected to be completed in 28 months.
