BECE: 78 Students Sacked; Two Teachers Arrested

At least 78 students who had hope of taking part in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Exams (BECE) were sacked at Akyem Kwarbeng in the Atiwa District of the Eastern region.

Two teachers have also been arrested by the Police in connection with the examination fiasco.

The affected students are mostly past BECE candidates who attempted to register to get new certificates to enable them benefit from government’s Free SHS program following Ministry of Education’s directive disqualifying all past BECE holders from benefiting from the Free SHS from this year onwards.

The affected students all from Koforidua, the Eastern regional capital were transported and parked in a small cubicle under the guise of going to write the exams.

Angry parents of the affected students stormed the examination centre to cause commotion after hearing that their children have been denied access to write the exams.

Before the exams, Starr News gathered that two private remedial schools in Koforidua were struggling to register their prospective candidates numbering 600.

The students were made to pay various sums of money including Ghc200 for WAEC fees and cohabiting School fees, aside the registration fees, some of the students paid as high as Ghc1, 200.

Their students were subsequently distributed to their “cohabitation schools” in some rural communities in the region to be registered as part of candidates presented by the school to be registered by WAE.
