13-Year-Old Student Leads Campaign to Support Schoolgirls with Menstrual Health Needs

A 13-year-old student of Halter Academy, Tamara Oduekie Terkper, has taken an inspiring step toward supporting underprivileged girls by leading a menstrual health campaign under the Sir Bright Foundation.
Motivated by the challenges faced by many of her peers who often miss school due to lack of access to sanitary pads, Tamara launched a campaign to provide essential menstrual hygiene products and education to girls in need. Her initiative aims to reduce absenteeism and promote menstrual health awareness among young girls.
During the campaign, Tamara, supported by the Sir Bright Foundation, distributed sanitary pads and hygiene kits to several students. She also encouraged open conversations about menstruation to combat stigma and misinformation.
Officials from the Sir Bright Foundation praised her leadership and commitment, noting that such youth-driven initiatives are crucial for community empowerment. They emphasized that providing menstrual health education and resources helps keep more girls in school and promotes gender equality in education.
Teachers and parents at Halter Academy have also lauded Tamara’s efforts, describing her as a role model for young people. They believe her initiative has inspired confidence among female students and helped create a more supportive school environment.
“I saw that some girls missed classes because they didn’t have what they needed during their period,” Tamara said. “I wanted to change that so every girl can come to school confidently.”
The Sir Bright Foundation has announced plans to expand the campaign to other schools across Ghana, providing both hygiene products and educational workshops on menstrual health and self-esteem.
